Autumn City Scape

Just scenery pictures to show the opposites I see. The city is Toyohashi, just 190 yen and 6 minutes away by train. The rice field I pass by on my way home from school. I don't know why it is bundled, it must be to dry it out before harvesting. The bundles come just past my knees, I think. They look like small haystacks.

Osu Kannon Temple and Shopping
Osu Kannon is a very old (several hundred years...don't know the details) temple in Nagoya that also conveniently has a lot of shopping nearby. We toured the anime stores near there today. Nicholas, Teresa, Michelle and I met Deborah and Jesse, as well as Kim and ...Taylor? We had a lovely time. The shops are very very crowded, and I have no money to spend until payday later this week, but it was still fun. I bought a couple of Azumanga Daioh buttons, and I found a TON of clothing stores I want to go back to. Clothes are cheaper in the big city. We even found a place to buy tacos, although they weren't very good. The rest is told by the pictures, I think. Tommorrow is a national holiday, so we could stay out late today

Michelle and I saw this monk just standing in an unused stairwell. It's a little bit creepy. From the downstairs side, the stairwell is hidden and off to the side, so no one can see up it. He just...stands there. She was too scared to take the picture, so I did.

For the rest, I was in Toyota today.

So, today was sports day. The weather turned out to be absolutely idea for being outside. Sunny with a cool breeze. The morning assembly we practiced in the heat didn't seem all that important, but it was impressive. I was more impressed by the afternoon ceremony after the sports day though because all the students looked so...happy. I guess sports and the outdoors really do do some good. The unusual things about today were the jumproping competition, and the relay with the swimming guy (see image). I got to hang out in the teachers tent and a student kep bringing me iced tea on a serving platter. I felt very important.

Cultural Festival
The cultural festival involved a lot of me not knowing where I was supposed to be, so I just hung out in 2E, with the second year class of English students. The arm wrestling competition was the highlight of the day. Some of the pictures I took just because the angles of the courtyard were cool, and may not be interesting.

Today was truly odd. The kids stood out in the blazing sun for two hours rehearsing for sports day. They practiced the opening ceremony. I hope it ends up that sports day is important and parents come or something. If they are just having the ceremony for the sake of it, I really pity them. They continued the game of having kids pass out, and be carried to the nurse, though only one today that I noticed, from the comfort and shade of the teacher's tent.
