Just a few more pictures of the Mito Town festival from my crappy camera. There were a lot of cultural performances on the stage outside. The picture of the poms sucks. (They call them "batons" here) Since I live in Aichi, you can see behind the hula dancers, the decorations are the two mascots for the World's Fair (World Expo) that will be in Nagoya next march.

I, being without camera, did not take any pictures of the play, but I have aquired three. See Mount Mito in the back? Our little town does look a bit like Austria. Well, the mountains anyway, not the buildings or people! The play was entirely in English, but in the second picture you can see the screen, we had a summary of each scene printed in Japanese. They were so wonderful! Especially Maria and the Captain. Rodrigo, the captain, went on to win the English speech contest for all of Aichi the next week. And the Baroness was amazing, considering she is twelve years old! (She is as almost as tall as the captain...see her in orange in the third picture) More later.

Don't have sex! Karaoke! And Jazz!
|
|
Friday, I went to a club with a bunch of Jets. They were all drunk, like good English speakers, but, the bar wasn't too smoky. And the band was fantastic! The first band played a cover of the Mario Brothers music, and the second band (seen in picture) was three girls who rocked! The drummer had a nifty box, set up like the vest from the drummer from Fleetwood Mac. Hit different spots for different sounds. The former drummer in me wants it badly.
I went to Karaoke on Saturday for the first time. Karaoke in Japan has many small private rooms so I went mith Michelle and two of her friends/co-teachers, Shiori and Akiko. They had a ton of songs in English, and I even attempted a Japanese song, but I can't read fast enough...Renee would've been able to do it, she knows "Every Heart" by heart.
When we were out in Nagoya on Sunday we saw these protesters. They had signs that said, "No sex with army!" Hunh? I laughed so hard. I had a very nice lady gave us the pamphlet telling us that as a war protest we should all not have sex with people in the army. Then they would stop fighting and we can save the world! Yay!

Speech contest and Toyota Acrobats
|
|
Saturday I had to go to school because the foreign exchange students had a speech contest. I only snapped on pic before my batteries died. Today I went to Toyota and we randomly caught a performance by chinese acrobats/jugglers/performers out in the square. They were wonderful! The girls spun plates on sticks, then the guy in the white clothes did a dance where his masks disappereard quickly as if my magic. Then the young guy juggled, and stood on a board and balanced. The girls did acrobatics and flipped the younger one around only using her legs.
(Sorry if my grammar is bad, it is late, and I am tired)

For those of you who don't know what Gothic Lolita is, it is a strange style of dressing, it can be cutesy Anne of Green Gables-ish, or Gothy Vampire-ish. Many younger people dress this way on Sundays. It is called cosplay. Maybe it is just to get attention, a lot of people do take their pictures. But it is really interesting coming from the country bent on conformity. Anyway, one of my students went shopping for her own Gothic Lolita clothes, and the second two pictures are what she bought. I will try to snap more pictures of people on the street dressed Gothic Lolita style in the future. There is one I took in the Osu Kannon pictures.

Today was Toyota's Shrine festival. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend, but Nicholas went and met Tony and Teresa, and he took these pictures.

Okay, so when Teresa, Michelle, Deborah, and I were in Osu Kannon, we went into the gaming arcade (shown previously) and we participated in a traditional Japanese custom...the picture booth. But not just any picture booth. They are huge! You could fit 8 people in it. And they are cheap. You get one sheet of pictures, but you pick if you want one big one or a zillion small ones. And you get to write on it, and stamp it, and play a little video game while you wait. It is so cool. The girls collect little books of them and trade them with their friends....I think I would be addicted if I were younger...and maybe I will be anyway. Well, here is the first.
