Uh...This was on friday the 15th, but I already put pictures on that day. This is rehearsal for "Kaguya Hime meets Dorothy from Oz." Don't ask. It is definately the worst play I have ever written. But, at least everyone gets a chance to speak. We are singing Moon River and Over the Rainbow.

Miwajima is near Hiroshima. It is a very famous island with the red torii gate in the ocean. It is frequently damaged by typhoons, but it is one of the most famous images of Japan. I went in the morning, so the tide was out. At night the tide is in and the whole shrine it looks like it floats on the water.

Sports Day

The sign I liked.

I was told to be a judge of the class signs that they painted. Of course, they didn't translate the criteria for me, so I had no idea what I was supposed to be assessing. I liked the 2E student's sign. They have 5 students gone to study abroad and they made the "E"ncredibles the 5 students who are gone, so they are with them in spirit.
Other than that, it was a typical sports day. Not too hot. I participated in the Tug of War with the 3E class. Oh! And I was very pleased to see the 1-3 class use the phrase "Do my best" on their sign. I taught them that last week.

A bunch more hiroshima pictures

The streetcar track through Hiroshima
From the atomic bomb
Cranes for Sadako

Uh....these ones I forgot back in August. Mostly Hiroshima city and the peace museum.

On the way back form the island I had to change trains in Hiroshima. It's an easy streetcar ride to the peace museum, so I stopped by on my own. The first time I wanted to go to Japan was in the third grade when Christy's mom read us "Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes." Then in the 4th grade my class folded 1000 paper cranes and mailed them to Japan for Sadako's monument. So, it seemed a fitting tribute to hike over there and see where they had gone. Especially since our countries are irrevocably linked by that stupid atomic bomb. The museum itself is a lot of panels with information to read. It is surprisingly even-handed. Neither Japan or the U.S. are the evil ones. The only thing that bothered me is that there were a few actual preserved body parts on display and I thought that was completely unneccessary. As a special exhibit they had a few manuscript pages of the Barefoot Gen comic on display because it is the 60th anniversary of the bombing. I spent a lot of time staring at them and filing away composition notes, geek that I am.
People in Hiroshima are very friendly. People in the stores randomly chat with me in Japanese. That has NEVER happened to me in the north. People avoid me there, and the seats next to me on the train are always the last ones taken. Hiroshima is also great because it is so logically organized and easy to get around. Well, that sucks a bit because they had to re-make the city after the bomb, so it has wide streets now and square blocks. But, the end result is still very comfortable.

Visiting Yuka near Hiroshima, on a little island. We went to a festival. Yuka's older auntie wrapped me in my Yukata. We danced a traditional Obon dance. Then we ate slushies (Kakigori).

Sorry I never posted these. The Children's World Summit for the Environment, sponsored by the U.N. It was one week at the end of July. We also went to the Aichi World Expo. Most of these photos were at the expo. Anything with traditional clothing is from the party at the end of the week. Everyone was supposed to come in "traditional clothing." It made the americans a bit sad. What is traditional clothing? Would I have to be a cowboy? Or wear jeans and a t-shirt?

Sorry I never posted these. We had a three day English camp in Okazaki. They spent the night at a community center, and wrote short dramas and performed them.

The bonsai man is always trimming his trees. They are immaculate. I want to get a closer picture, but I can't speak enough japanese to ask him. (Plus, I'm too embarrassed.)
