Dressing the Mikado and more costumes

I like this one

I don't want to begin to discuss the problems we have had with the costumes. Ok, well I will begin. Everyone was supposed to have a hat. That's it. Nice and simple. Student play. Now somehow we have the Mikado wearing a $1 mil yen authentic shrine outfit borrowed from former kocho-sensei. Um...I'm not okay with that. But, everyone else is. And it does look lovely.

Here is a series from them dressing our Chinese exchange student playing the emperor of Japan.

Then some shots of the other costumes

Just a few changed to B&w. Not sure how well it worked. They are all a bit low-contrast.

Lonely white room

Pictures from last week's rehearsal. In the mini-screen the flash made them seem much to bright, but in actuality on the computer screen they are all right, and the ones that appeared perfect on the mini-screen are a bit too fuzzy. Sigh. Never quite right. I left the file sizes big. If any of you people from the play copy it you might need to shrink the file.

More autumn plants.

The lonely flower. I like the diagonals in this one.

I like plants. I like taking pictures of plants. I am sure I look ridiculous hopping off my bike on my way to school to snap a photo.

Okay, so I'm obsessed with autumn rice fields? So what! Autumn in my town looks like spring in Iowa. The flowers don't really come out here until September and October.

Some of the people who are in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Though strangely, not Rosencrantz or Guildenstern. Can you tell how much fun we have...and how tired we were? Today they tried to teach me how to be a guy. It took a long time and was only moderately successful.

Biwa Concert

Traditional (matcha) tea and sweets (manjou)
Miss K (Kuwabara?)
Biwa concert

The biwa is a Japanese string instrument. It is...weird. She basically smacks or plucks the strings with the trianglular piece of wood. Sometimes the smacking noise of wood on wood is part of the sound. And she sings parts of historical stories. In a very traditional style of singing. She was a very energetic and interesting lady. She is supposed to be one of the top biwa singers in Japan. She led us on sing alongs of some waka poems. But...as I don't understand Japanese, I didn't get much out of it. The building however was beautiful. It was in Nagoya, in an old teahouse from the edo period. The leaves are just beginning to change, and even through the rain I could see the vibrant red leaves beginning to peek through the green. The tatami room where she performed was beautiful. They had an old fashioned teapot set up (see picture). They served us tea and manjou, and then hauled us three foreigners off to the back room to be taught tea ceremony. The manjou was good. It wasn't only anko, it had chestnut paste inside. Yum! I tried to sit seiza for the concert (kneeling) in the traidional way, but I only lasted about 20 minutes. The Japanese people held out remarkably. Some of them even managed to nod off to sleep while sitting seiza. I couldn't imagine! It hurts too much and my feet fall asleep, even on the pillow.
