In Japan the students graduate on March 1st. They go to high school for 3 years, and so the students who graduated are the ones who were 1st year students when I arrived. It was quite sad, and everyone was crying! I also realized looking at these pictures that the crappy polyester suit I bought as an emergency suit before I came here is ill-fitting and awful. I will soon invest in a real suit, I promise.

Miyajima Island

we went to Miyajima island and to Hiroshima over the 3 day weekend Nov. 3-6? (I think). More pics will come but this site is being stupid. But, we took pics over the course of a day, can you see the tide come in and go out?

October 30th, 2006. English Drama at the Mito Festival. Snow White, and the Russian story of Pulling out the big Turnip. Some of the pics are from rehearsal and some from the show...it's pretty obvious which are which. Most of them are pretty low quality because I couldn't get the nice ones to load.

This is Gamagori's town festival. They carry big portable shrines from the small islands in the bay, up onto the land, and over to the main shrine. No one seems to know why, other than they always have. Maybe to pray for good weather, calm seas, fertility, or something like that.
